Worth knowing about the 2024 3 Series

  • Tire chains. The manual permits chains or cables, on the drive wheels only, fitted to the standard tire size. Chains for this size on Amazon →
  • Tires. Chains go in pairs on the rear wheels only and only on 225/50R17 or 225/45R18 tires; staggered 18- to 20-in sport options use 255-section rear tires, and the pressures shown are the manual's front and rear figures for all-season tires up to 100 mph.
  • Torque. Tighten lug nuts to 101 ft-lbs in a star pattern with a torque wrench, and re-check after the first 50 miles. This figure is from the owner's manual; an impact gun will overshoot it.
  • Wheels. The 3 Series uses wheel bolts rather than lug nuts, tightened crosswise.
  • Garage fit. Allow 15.5 ft of length and 6.8 ft of width with the mirrors out.
  • Octane. The manual requires 87 octane and recommends 91 for full performance. Regular will not harm the engine; premium is a choice, not a requirement.
