Worth knowing about the 2018 X3

  • Wipers. The connector type is not confirmed, so choose blades listed for this model rather than by length alone.
  • Tire chains. The manual permits tire chains or cables, within limits on which tires and which wheels. Those limits are in the next note; read them before you fit anything. Search Amazon for tire chains →
  • Tires. Chains go in pairs on the rear wheels only, with 225/60R18 or 245/50R19 tires.
  • Torque. Tighten lug nuts to 101 ft-lbs in a star pattern with a torque wrench, and re-check after the first 50 miles. This figure is from the owner's manual; an impact gun will overshoot it.
  • Wheels. BMW uses wheel bolts rather than lug nuts, tightened crosswise.
  • Roof load. The 220 lb roof limit is the dynamic figure for driving and includes the rack itself. It is not a limit for a rooftop tent when parked; the manual gives no static figure.
  • Garage fit. Allow 15.5 ft of length and 7.1 ft of width with the mirrors out.
  • Dimensions. GVWR is the xDrive30i figure; the manual rates the M40i at 5,412 lb.
  • Octane. The manual recommends 91 octane for full performance and allows 89. 89 will not harm the engine; the higher grade is a choice, not a requirement.
