Worth knowing about the 2018 Forester
- Connector. Both front blades use a j-hook connector. A blade of the right length with the wrong connector will not clip on, so check the connector before you buy.
- LED lighting. The brake light is a sealed LED unit with no user-replaceable bulb. A failure means replacing the assembly.
- Bulbs. The halogen H11 and HB3 codes do not apply to the LED headlights on upper trims, and fog lights with the steering-responsive system take H11 instead of H16.
- Spare. This vehicle carries a compact (temporary) spare.
- Tire chains. The manual says not to fit tire chains on this vehicle; wheel-well clearance is too tight.
- Tires. The manual says tire chains cannot be used; a non-chain traction device may be acceptable only if its maker recommends it for the vehicle.
- Torque. Tighten lug nuts to 89 ft-lbs in a star pattern with a torque wrench, and re-check after the first 50 miles. This figure is from the owner's manual; an impact gun will overshoot it.
- TPMS. New sensors on this car need a relearn (tool); they will not pair on their own by driving.
- Key fob. Match the FCC ID (HYQ14AHC) printed on the back of your fob when buying a replacement; the same car can use two fob designs in one year. A new fob still needs programming to the car.
- Key fob. Cars without Keyless Access use a remote-head key whose transmitter takes a CR1620.
- Roof load. The 150 lb roof limit is the dynamic figure for driving and includes the rack itself. It is not a limit for a rooftop tent when parked; the manual gives no static figure.
- Dimensions. The figures above are for the 2.5i Premium; other body configurations differ in length, wheelbase and weight.
- Fuel. The manual recommends 93 octane for the 2.0XT's full performance and allows 87, but calls for at least 91 when towing, carrying heavy loads or if the engine knocks.
