Worth knowing about the 2023 Atlas

  • Spare. This vehicle carries a compact (temporary) spare, size T165/80R17. Search Amazon for spare tires →
  • Tire chains. The manual permits tire chains or cables, within limits on which tires and which wheels. Those limits are in the next note; read them before you fit anything. Search Amazon for tire chains →
  • Tires. The manual allows snow chains on the front wheels only and only with a 245/65R17 tire on a 7.5x17 wheel, a size the Atlas was not sold on, so chains need that dedicated wheel and tire set.
  • Torque. Tighten lug nuts to 88 ft-lbs in a star pattern with a torque wrench, and re-check after the first 50 miles. This figure is from the owner's manual; an impact gun will overshoot it.
  • Wheels. The wheels are held by wheel bolts that thread into the hub rather than by nuts, and the manual gives one torque for steel and alloy wheels.
  • Roof load. The 200 lb roof limit is the dynamic figure for driving and includes the rack itself. It is not a limit for a rooftop tent when parked; the manual gives no static figure.
  • Garage fit. Allow 16.8 ft of length and 7.4 ft of width with the mirrors out.
  • Dimensions. Curb weight and GVWR differ by engine and drive, from 4,255 lb and 5,622 lb for the front-drive 2.0T to 4,594 lb and 6,019 lb for the 4Motion V6.
  • Fuel. Volkswagen recommends 91 octane premium for the 2.0-liter turbo to reach its rated power and torque.
