Worth knowing about the 2015 Explorer

  • Wipers. RockAuto's ACDelco listing names a side-lock arm, but no second blade maker confirms the connector, so choose blades listed for this model.
  • LED lighting. The brake light, tail light are sealed LED units with no user-replaceable bulb. A failure means replacing the assembly.
  • Bulbs. One HB3 (9005) bulb serves low and high beam, and models with HID headlamps use a D3S bulb.
  • Tire chains. The manual permits tire chains or cables, within limits on which tires and which wheels. Those limits are in the next note; read them before you fit anything. Search Amazon for tire chains →
  • Tires. The manual allows cable chains rated 10 mm or less, which not every Class S chain meets, on the front wheels only with P245/60R18 tires and forbids any traction device on P255/50R20, P245/50R20 or 265/45ZR20 tires.
  • Torque. Tighten lug nuts to 100 ft-lbs in a star pattern with a torque wrench, and re-check after the first 50 miles. This figure is from the owner's manual; an impact gun will overshoot it.
  • Wheels. Retighten the lug nuts to 100 lb-ft within 100 miles after any wheel is removed, as the manual directs.
  • Key fob. Models with push-button start use an Intelligent Access key instead.
  • Roof load. The 100 lb roof limit is the dynamic figure for driving and includes the rack itself. It is not a limit for a rooftop tent when parked; the manual gives no static figure.
  • Roof. The load goes on crossbars fitted to the side rails, never directly on the roof panel.
  • Garage fit. Allow 16.5 ft of length and 7.6 ft of width with the mirrors out.
  • Fuel. The manual recommends premium fuel for the EcoBoost engines when towing.
