Worth knowing about the 2017 Explorer
- LED lighting. The low beam, daytime running, brake light, tail light are sealed LED units with no user-replaceable bulb. A failure means replacing the assembly.
- Bulbs. The manual lists the rear turn bulb as WY21W, the reverse bulb as W21W and the license bulb as W5W.
- Tire chains. The manual permits chains or cables of SAE Class S (low clearance), on the drive wheels only, fitted to the standard tire size. Chains for this size on Amazon →
- Tires. Ford approves chains or cables of 10 mm or less only on the 18x8 wheel with P245/60R18 tires.
- Torque. Tighten lug nuts to 100 ft-lbs in a star pattern with a torque wrench, and re-check after the first 50 miles. This figure is from the owner's manual; an impact gun will overshoot it.
- Key fob. Cars with Intelligent Access use a smart key that takes two CR2025 cells.
- Roof load. The 100 lb roof limit is the dynamic figure for driving and includes the rack itself. It is not a limit for a rooftop tent when parked; the manual gives no static figure.
- Roof. The limit drops to 45 lb on vehicles with a moonroof.
- Octane. The manual requires 87 octane and recommends 91 for full performance. Regular will not harm the engine; premium is a choice, not a requirement.
